This was a quick and easy read. The storyline was okay, but I agree with another reviewer who felt it would've been a better story (better suspense) without Maria’s POV giving out spoilers.I didn't feel like the characters were fully fleshed out. None of them really seemed to have much personality. Especially the men. There was a lot of unnecessary repetition!!!There were several editing errors. These are a few that stood out:pg. 11 “had got up”pg. 18 “let’s all got out”pg. 104 “you give it us back”pg. 196 “dialled”There were also a few places Lily's and Emma’s names were mixed up:pg. 79 “Emma” (Lily)pg. 192 “Lily” (Emma)pg. 193 “Lily” (Emma) - twice on the same pageThese were all simple mistakes a common proofreader would have caught. Please edit before publication!!! Don't make your readers do it for you! If an author can't be bothered to have their books properly edited before publishing, then they shouldn't expect a potential reader to be bothered to buy or read their book.Lily Metcalfe, 25, is single, works in a gift shop, lives with her boyfriend, Seb, a plumber, and has a 5-year-old sister, Emma. Her parents, Gareth and Ruth Metcalfe, were married for 28 years. The girls’ mother, Ruth, passed away a year ago after a 12-month battle with breast cancer. Her father, Gareth, is still a handsome man, makes good money as a financial advisor, and has a beautiful home. He has struggled with grief, loneliness, working full-time, and raising a preschooler on his own, with lots of help from older daughter, Lily, but is exhausted. It has all taken a toll.Lily is shocked to find him at a cafe getting cosy with none other than Maria Taylor, 40, who was her mother's trusted friend and cancer support beauty specialist for the last year of her life. Lily's dad told her they'd been seeing each other for several months, since he stopped by hospice one day to thank them and make a donation. He’d seen Maria there and invited her for coffee to thank her for all she had done for Ruth. She asked how he was doing, and it all started from there. Now they're engaged. Lily was angry at her father and this woman she knew nothing about who was supposed to have been her mom's friend. She didn't trust her. The more she found out, the less she trusted her. Her warnings fell on her father's deaf ears.Maria owned a high-end salon and spa, Daisy's Beauty Care, but provided free wigs, facials, make up, pedicures, manicures, and beauty products to cancer patients. She also volunteered her time for charity fundraisers and marathons. But she didn't seem to exist until 10 years ago. She dodged Lily's questions about her past. What was she hiding? When Lily and her boyfriend return from a 2-week long holiday in the Dominican Republic, she finds out Maria has moved into her childhood home with her father and little sister. Not only that, they're getting married the following month. Lily has to grin and bear it because she doesn't want to become estranged from her father or lose access to her little sister. But she still thinks Maria is taking advantage of her dad and doesn't like it.Characters in the story:Lily Metcalfe - 25, daughter/gift store clerkSeb - her live-in boyfriend/plumberEmma Metcalfe - 5, her little sisterRuth Metcalfe - their late motherGareth Metcalfe - their widowed father/fin. advisorMaria Taylor - 40/salon owner/father’s love interestHazel - Emma’s babysitterAmanda - Maria’s employeeOlivia - Maria’s employeeSophie - Maria’s employeeCandice - Maria’s employeeSimon Wright - sonAlicia Wright - daughterSarah Wright - motherAnthony Wright - fatherJoan - Sarah's sister/kids’ auntAl - Amanda's hot new boyfriendSue - Maria’s late friend/cancer victimGrace Henderson - journalist for local newspaperKimona - charity volunteerJoe - Seb’s friend since childhoodStacey - his new girlfriendEdward Lawson - shop ownerDiane Lawson - his wifeStefanie Lawson - their daughterChris - her new married boyfriend-----------------------------------------------------------From the blurb:She seems too good to be true. And now she lives in your home…Lily wants to be happy for her father when he tells her he’s getting married again. Even if it feels too soon after the death of Lily’s mother. He’s madly in love with Maria. And he thinks she’s going to the perfect stepmother to Lily’s much-younger sister, Emma. And perhaps he’s right. Because no one seems to have a bad word to say about Maria. It’s only Lily who can’t trust her. Who thinks no one is that perfect. Who notices no one had ever heard of Maria until exactly ten years before. And then Emma goes missing… This story was like a broken record. Both the main characters just repeating the same thoughts over and over. The rest of the story was not that interesting. It was easy to read though aside from the several typo errors I noticed. The author herself seemed to get her own characters confused, Lily runs into the room looking for her sister, calling "Lily!"...I doubt that I will ever read anything else by this author.
